The first step towards a career as a personal trainer is obtaining your certification. Unfortunately navigating your way through the many different training academy and course options can be overwhelming. After you have the answers to these 6 questions it will become a lot clearer and simple for you.

I have personally spoken to well over a thousand people seeking information on a fitness certification and today I’m going to answer 6 of the most common questions that I get asked. Having access to this information will dramatically shorten the time you need to spend on research so you will be in a better position to make an informed and educated choice.

The questions I’m about to answer are.

How long will it take to complete a Cert III and IV Fitness accreditation?

Should I choose an online or face to face course?

How much will it or should it cost me?

Am I to old or young to start a career or business in the health and fitness industry?

Will I have to do hours and hours of work placement?

Will I have to work crazy hours to succeed?

So let’s go.

Q: How long will it take

At the time of shooting this video the Department of Education sets out that you have 18 months to complete your course.

If you choose an online course, it will more than likely be self-paced and as such how quickly you get it done will depend on your personal circumstances, like how much time you can devote to study, your existing experience and skills etc.

A face to face course will obviously have a set duration as the classes will be on a scheduled time table just like when you attended high school or uni. The courses can range from 3 months to a year.

Don’t hesitate to contact me if you want to discuss your specific circumstances and remember I am not selling Cert III and IV Fitness courses so I can and will provide you with completely unbiased advice.

Q: Should I choose online or face to face

This is definitely something you should consider carefully as everyone processes and learns new information in different ways.

There are three main cognitive learning styles: they are visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic.

Knowing where you are personally is a great place to start when considering the best learning platform for yourself. Contact me if you want more detail about these learning styles, and to discuss what may be the best learning environment for you.

A brief description of each learning style is, Visual learners tend to use objects and pictures, they like graphs, they need to see facial expressions, they learn better from lectures by watching them rather than listening to them.

Auditory learners retain information through hearing and speaking, they like to be explained how to do things and they usually concentrate better with soft music playing in the background.

Kinaesthetic learners like a hands-on approach, they would rather be shown how to do something than to have it verbally explained to them, and they usually prefer group work more than others.

It’s important to note that you can absolutely be a combination of all three learning styles.

I’m am personally predominately Kinaesthetic and Visual; I absolutely prefer a classroom environment however I am far too busy to be able to commit to a classroom timetable, so I need to be sure any online course I do is going to be achievable.

Q: How much does it cost

You can expect to pay between $1,000.00 and $1,500.00 on average for an individual certification when studying online, I personally would not pay any more than that unless the course is a blend of online and face to face.

When studying Face to Face it can be between $5,000 and $10,000 depending on the venue, service and support provided.

Prices will vary significantly and its extremely important you do your research, ask how long the training organisation has been in business for, ask how experienced the people working there are, particularly the ones that will be supporting you.

Ask what training platform they are using as there is a massive difference from those who use Google Drive to the type of platforms the major universities and schools use, ask exactly how student support works and how long it takes to connect with a real human. Ask them if they guarantee their service levels.

Make sure you are speaking to someone who is legitimately there to help you not just trying to hard sell you anything.

Be a sophisticated buyer, ask lots of questions and ensure you are getting honest reliable answers so you can make an informed decision. And if in doubt reach out to me.

Q: Am I too old or young to enter the industry

My answer is always the same, absolutely no, you are not too old or too young.

The ripped, fit and sexy bodies you see on social media and inside many commercial gyms is not a true reflection of the community seeking and needing help from a personal trainer.

Most of the community we as Personal Trainers are here to serve are intimidated, afraid or embarrassed to be in a gym filled with buffed fitness enthusiast. They are in need of and are seeking a real human connection to help them find their place in a gym and this often starts in their own home, at a local group class or even on line.

You see you do not need to be buffed and have a wardrobe filled with designer gym gear to be a health industry professional, you simply need to be real, relatable and possess the heart, skills, and passion to help and serve others.

Trust me if this is you, if you are real, relatable and possess the heart, skills, and passion to help and serve others then regardless of your age or the way you look, people will come to you and there will be lots of them.

Q: Will I have to do hours of work placement

This has changed significantly and at the time of shooting this video it really depends on your personal experience along with the way the training academy you choose has designed and delivers their course.

The good Academies will understand that everyone has their own life and work commitments and should have formulated their industry placement requirements on the basis that most students are already completing some form of fitness regime, additionally they will provide opportunities for people who aren’t to introduce themselves to the fitness industry.

It really does depend on the individual, if you have never set foot in a gym before then logically getting yourself out there will be essential to your learning and success, on the other hand if you have already spent hours or even years in gyms and are training regularly then you may already have sufficient experience.

Q: Will I have to work crazy hours to succeed in the health and fitness industry?

Not if you are organised, simple things like filling your diary up with as many sessions as possible in the hours that you want to work will help you keep control of your time.

The key really is learning to leverage your time and resources effectively. Do this well and you will be in complete control of the hours you need to work and most importantly you will have a platform to grow your income exponentially without having to put in more hours.

Make it a priority to find someone who can guide and mentor you through this stuff so you can safely navigate your way into the industry, and it would be my pleasure to be that someone for you when you are ready.
